Social Governments Award 2023: Analysis of Social Media Platforms Usage in Arab Governments.
Social Governments Institute conducted a recent study on the use of social media platforms by Arab governments, and the results were revealed in the framework of the “Social Governments Award” for 2023. This study revealed the widespread use of social media platforms by government institutions in all Arab countries and in all different government sectors, whether sovereign or service sectors.
The study shows that these institutions rely on an average of four social media platforms to communicate with citizens, and some of them see an increase of up to nine platforms or a decrease in this number to only one platform, with the multiplicity of languages they manage on them, which reached five languages to accommodate the diversity of cultures and communities in each country. This highlights the growing challenges and opportunities in the field of managing government communications across multiple platforms to meet the needs of citizens.
According to the institute’s report, this widespread reliance shows a great diversity in government communication strategies, as governments seek effective interaction with citizens. This comes within the framework of the launch of the “Social Governments Award” as an initiative to enhance communication and honor excellence in platforms and innovative digital content on social media at the level of Arab countries in order to meet the requirements and aspirations of citizens.
This award aims to shed light on the roles of governments in achieving a future vision, with a focus on innovation in providing government services and enhancing community communication. The Social Governments Institute, headquartered in the UAE, works to enhance the capabilities of governments to interact with the community through social media networks, with the aim of building effective and sustainable governments.
Social Governments is a modern model of government administration that combines the concepts of participatory governments, open and transparent governments, and smart governments. This model is in line with the increasing use of social media networks in the Arab world, which contributes to achieving direct and effective communication between the citizen and the government as well as the business sectors.
In the context of analyzing the use of social media platforms in Arab countries, the study revealed a clear variation in the preferences of citizens and their patterns of using those platforms. There is a diversity in the use of platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok and Twitter in the Gulf countries, while the residents of the Levant and Iraq prefer to use Facebook, TikTok and Instagram.
On the other hand, North African countries stand out for their noticeable use of Facebook and YouTube, with a clear growth in the use of TikTok. Egypt, on the other hand, shows another diversity in the platforms used, where Meta platforms (Facebook and Instagram) dominate the scene, followed by YouTube platforms and a weak presence of Twitter.
Eng. Ahmed Sabry, Director of the Institute, explained that these differences increase the challenges facing Arab governments in communicating with citizens, stressing the importance of research and development to keep pace with digital developments in Arab societies. This is one of the most important goals of the Social Governments Institute and its future vision.
